Camelot And The Sale Of The Names Of Winners

EDM number 205 in 1995-96, proposed by Robert Maclennan on 12/12/1995.

That this House notes with concern the decision of the National Lottery operators Camelot to lodge plans with the Data Protection Registrar to sell the identity of winners to 'list brokers' who supply junk mail; believes that this is a potential infringement upon the privacy of winners and will cause a great deal of distress to those who wish to withhold their identity from the public domain; believes that Camelot should not be allowed to sell the names of winners without the express permission of those concerned; further believes that any revenue raised from such a sale should be used to fund charities and good causes; and calls upon the Government to ensure that this is so.
