Fear Of Crime Among Women

That this House is concerned about the results of the recent survey conducted for the car leasing and retailing group, Cowie, which revealed that women are so scared of being attacked in their cars that some would consider carrying knives, guns and crowbars to protect themselves: notes that 92 per cent, of women surveyed said that they would opt for a mobile phone, personal alarm or spray which could be squirted in the face of the attacker if it proved necessary; agrees with Julie Jobling of Cowie that 'women should not feel the need to carry a weapon in order to feel safe'; consider that the fear of crime among women, as illustrated by the latest crime survey which found that 49 per cent. of women felt unsafe when walking in streets near to their homes at night, is now so serious as to demand Government action; and calls upon th e Home Secretary to take immediate steps to do whatever is necessary to alleviate the fear of crime among women.
