Christopher Searle

EDM number 284 in 1995-96, proposed by Tony Benn on 16/01/1996.

That this House wishes to place on record its deep appreciation for the distinguished and committed life-long service given by Christopher Searle to the cause of education, here and world-wide; recognises his great contribution to research into, and the practice of multi-cultural and anti-racist teaching, creative writing and literacy, within a fully comprehensive system of community education; notes his many years of works in London, Grenada, Mozambique and Sheffield during which he has inspired so many teachers and students and demonstrated his capacity to win the active and dedicated support of local people and the ethnic communities, especially in deprived inner city areas; greatly regrets the decision of the Sheffield Education Committee to replace him as the Head Teacher of Earl Marshal Comprehensive School against the opposition of a majority of the governors of that school, and the decision, by that authority, to strip those governors of their powers so as to impose that decision; calls upon the Sheffield Education Authority to restore to the governors of that school their full powers to act; and expresses the hope that Mr Searle's great talents and formidable abilities may be fully used, in the future, for the benefit of education in British society.

This motion has been signed by a total of 23 MPs, 3 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
