Norplant Contraceptive Implants;amdt. Line 1:

EDM number 28A1 in 1995-96, proposed by Martyn Jones on 07/12/1995.

leave out from 'House' to end and add 'notes that Norplant has been approved for use in Finland since 1983, and in over 40 countries, including the USA; further notes that since then it has been used by over one million American women; recognises the concerns of the Norplant Action Group about information for potential users of the contraceptive; but expresses deep concern at the interpretation in the BBC2 Horizon programme on 6th November relating to Norplant clinical and Bangladesh preintroduction trials, and to the unfounded allegations of a link between Norplant and the syndrome idiopathic intracranial hypertension; welcomes assurances from WHO that the allegations in the Horizon programme of lacing of tetanus vaccine with a contraceptive are totally false; further notes that such allegations could damage international programmes to reduce neonatal tetanus, a major cause of infant mortality in many countries; deplores Horizon's linking of quinacrine, an inadequately tested contraceptive, with Norplant; welcomes the development and introduction of comprehensively tested and researched methods of contraception; but calls for strict enforcement and improvement of training for doctors inserting and removing Norplant contraceptives in Britain and comprehensive monitoring and follow-up of women using this method of contraception.'.

This is a ammendment to 28.
