Derby And The Millennium Exhibition

EDM number 299 in 1995-96, proposed by Paddy Tipping on 17/01/1996.

That this House notes that four sites have been shortlisted to host the Millennium Exhibition; believes that only one of them, Pride Park in Derby, is a sustainable choice which is ready for development now; is impressed by the significant level of regional support for the Pride Park bid and the commitment of a strong local partnership which is determined to deliver inward investment to Derby and the East Midlands; further notes that the choice of Derby by the Millennium Commission will provide by far the best long-term economic and social return on its investment and create thousands of jobs in an area which has an unemployment rate significantly worse that the national average; welcomes the level of investment that has been committed to the site and the sophisticated land reclamation strategy that has already been implemented; is aware that none of the other sites has such strong local support or can guarantee that the Exhibition will be ready by 31st December 1999; and therefore calls on the Millennium Commission to choose the Pride Park site in Derby to host the Millennium Exhibition as a lasting symbol of the nation's dynamism, vision and creativity, as well as providing an unparalleled catalyst for regional regeneration.
