Government Education Expenditure
EDM number 33 in 1995-96, proposed by David Rendel on 15/11/1995.
That this House notes the Association of Metropolitan Authorities' report into the lack of central Government funding for vital services; notes that in the current year local education authorities are expected to cope with a cut in real terms of ú50 per primary pupil and ú194 per secondary pupil in the amount of money that the Government expects them to spend; notes that in England this represents a cut of over ú700 million; notes that failure to centrally fund the teachers' pay award reduced by ú300 million money available for expenditure on pupils; notes that in England from January 1994 to January 1995 the number of primary pupils in classes of 40 or more has risen by 30 per cent. to over 18,000; and calls upon the Government to provide the necessary resources in the 1996-97Budget and the Financial Statement so that all schools are funded adequately to provide high quality education for all children.
