New Eyesight Standards For Hgv Drivers

That this House notes the Government's decision that heavy goods vehicle licence holders will lose exemption from new higher standards for eyesight with the introduction of the Community driving licence on 1st July under the Second EU Directive; also notes, while welcoming the implied improvements in road safety, that the Government estimates 3000 heavy goods vehicle drivers will lose their jobs as a direct consequence; and calls on the Government to provide compensation for their loss of earnings, to facilitate high quality retraining, and to examine the feasibility of offering specialist medical treatment to improve the eyesight of heavy goods vehicle drivers affected, sufficient to meet the new requirements, who will otherwise lose their livelihoods.
