MEMBERS' PAY

EDM number 359 in 1995-96, proposed by Chris Mullin on 31/01/1996.

That this House believes that a desire to enter public service is the main incentive for going into politics; notes that there is no shortage of capable people wishing to enter Parliament; believes that being an honourable Member should be a full-time job; believes that large increases in dignity and integrity, rather than salary, are what is required to improve the standing of honourable Members in the eyes of the British people; and believes that, although there is a strong case, for removing from honourable Members, once and for all, decisions about their remuneration, there is no case for a salary increase above the rate of inflation.

This motion has been signed by a total of 18 MPs.
