Conduct Of The Honourable Member For Blaenau Gwent And A Welsh Assembly

EDM number 401 in 1995-96, proposed by Dafydd Wigley on 08/02/1996.

That this House notes the call made by the honourable Member for Blaenau Gwent on the BBC programme, On The Record, on Sunday 3rd February for a referendum on the issue of a Welsh elected assembly, thereby seeking a mechanism to second guess Labour's manifesto promises which he clearly does not support and casting doubt on the commitment of the Labour Party to Wales and Scotland; recalls that it was the support given in the 1970s by Labour honourable Members for a referendum with a 40 per cent. threshold which undermined Labour's plans for Scottish and Welsh assemblies, denying Scotland and Wales institutional structures which could have helped withstand some of the worse ravages of the Thatcher era; surmises that, as in the 70s, the rearguard action represented by the honourable Member for Blaenau Gwent's comments has not been countermanded by the Labour leadership; and concludes that Wales and Scotland cannot place their trust in such a divided Labour Party, and that the only certain way of supporting greater democracy at the next election will be by voting for Plaid Cymru and the SNP in Wales and Scotland, respectively.

This motion has been signed by a total of 3 MPs.
