Treatment Of Psychiatric Patients

That this House does not believe that prison is the appropriate place for those suffering from schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders; and while recognising that it is a desirable objective to integrate into the community to the maximum possible extend those suffering from such conditions, accepts that there is a need for a certain proportion of such patients to be treated in secure hospitals, and that an increase in such facilities is much needed, so as to avoid the inappropriate consignment of many people to prison when they need help, not merely incarceration.
