MERSEY DOCKS CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S PAY RISE

That this House condemns the decision of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company to increase the pay of its Chief Executive by ú87,000 a year, raising his salary by 38 per cent. to ú316,000 a year; notes that he has a futher opportunity over the next two years to increase his income by a further ú293,000 by taking up share options; is concerned that Mr Furlong's elevation to the league of overpaid executives has come to light against the backdrop of a damaging industrial dispute to which the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company management has contributed in large measure by their perfunctory sacking of 329 dockers thus inflicting hardship on the men and their families; notes that the sacked dockers enjoy the support of church leaders and the community at large in condemning the Victorian approach to working practices in management relations with a loyal work force who have played their full part in reviving the fortunes of the Port of Liverpool; and believes that the insensitive decision to give such a colossal pay rise to its Chief Executive will do nothing to create the climate in which the docks dispute can be amicably settled.
