Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (No. 2)

EDM number 674 in 1995-96, proposed by Harry Barnes on 27/03/1996.

That this House is alarmed that the Government is set to slaughter thousands of cows without proof that they are the ones infected with BSE, whilst other cattle will go undetected; notes that this action ignores the work of Dr Harash Narang, formerly of the Public Health Service Laboratory, who has developed two simple and effective tests to detect the presence of BSE in live and dead animals; believes that the Government is more concerned with being seen to do something to buy-off public opinion, rather than identifying, as far as is possible, actual instances of infection and taking effective action to deal with them; and calls upon the Government to make full use of Dr Narang's tests in any programme of slaughtering cattle, or to provide sound scientific evidence against them.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
