Farmers And The Environment

EDM number 682 in 1995-96, proposed by Ieuan Wyn Jones on 28/03/1996.

That this House wishes well to the new Environment Agency for its important work; notes however, with dismay that the Secretary of State for Wales, in launching the Agency's work in Wales on Wednesday 27th March in Bangor, made a keynote speech which totally failed to acknowledge the vital role of farmers as guardians of the countryside, or to indicate any understanding of the crisis now facing Welsh agriculture and the potential devastating effect this will have on the Welsh rural environment; and calls on the Secretary of State for Wales to take a far more pro-active role, in his capacity as both Minister of Agriculture for Wales and Secretary of State for Health in Wales, to address the problems arising from the BSE issue and to find a solution which safeguards both the health of the public and the viability of the farming fraternity as guardians of the environment.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
