Grounds For School Expulsions

EDM number 837 in 1995-96, proposed by Harry Cohen on 07/05/1996.

That this House deplores the expulsion of six-year-olds Lindsay Cartwright and Katy Saxton and eight-year-old Matthew Saxton from South Hiendley First School, near Wakefield, because their parents did not want them to take part in PE lessons without plimsolls; regards this as a frivolous reason for expulsions; calls for the suspension of the headteacher while this matter is investigated; and, in noting that school expulsions have currently soared to 15,000 per annum, condemns the Minister of Education for failing to act against frivolous school expulsions such as those of Lindsay, Katy and Matthew.

This motion has been signed by a total of 11 MPs.
