Victims Of Chernobyl

That this House notes the report of the UN Secretary General to the last General Assembly of the United Nations which concluded that concerted international efforts were required to bring to the attention of the international community the fact that the Chernobyl disaster was still a major humanitarian tragedy and that the magnitudes of its effects are expected to grow over the next 10 years; further notes that the resources available in the United Nations Trust Fund for Chernobyl have been exhausted and that further support from the international community will cease unless more resources are made available; applauds thedonation by Shetland Islands Council of humanitarian aid to the people of Belarus; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to give positive assistance to the people of Ukraine, Belarus and the Southern Russian Federation to help alleviate the continuing social, health, economic and environmental effects of the Chernobyl disaster.
