East Timor Conference

EDM number 178 in 1996-97, proposed by Ann Clwyd on 12/11/1996.

That this House deplores the decision by the Malaysian Government not to allow the Second Asia Pacific Conference on East Timor to take place in Kuala Lumpur from 9th-11th November thereby refusing to facilitiate discussions between people from the region with a view to considering how the countries of the region could promote a peaceful solution to the tragic situation in East Timor which has been under illegal Indonesian occupation since 1975; notes that the Malaysian police stood by while hundreds of hooligans assaulted and abused conference participants, that all the Malaysian participants were then arrested and all the foreign delegates were taken into custody and deported; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to press the Malaysian authorities to release without delay all the Malaysians who are still in detention and to drop all charges against them.
