Petrol Prices In The Highlands And Islands

EDM number 316 in 1996-97, proposed by James Wallace on 05/12/1996.

That this House notes with concern that the price of petrol in the Highlands and Islands has topped ú3 per gallon following the Budget increases in petrol duty without any compensatory measure to reduce vehicle excise duty on fuel efficient vehicles; notes that this is unsustainable due to the lack of alternative forms of transport in many areas and the distances which many rural drives must travel; notes further that the cost was already high in rural areas due to a combination of factors, including the pricing regime, low throughput and value added tax being applied to a higher price; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to take urgent action to end this unfair price differential.
