National Minimum Wage And The Social Chapter
EDM number 338 in 1996-97, proposed by Chris Mullin on 10/12/1996.
That this House notes with interest that three labourers employed to lay cables on behalf of One-Line Company by a Sunderland based sub-contractor, M.P. Burke, received just ú33.04 for five shifts of approximately 10 hours; notes that this figure was achieved because the company deducted the hire of equipment from their pay packets; further notes that the company describes itself as 'one of the most successful utility contractors in the UK'; finally notes that this kind of exploitation has become a regrettable fact of life under a Conservative Government; and looks forward to the introduction of a minimum wage and the EC Social Chapter and would not be dismayed if such measures were to put rogue employers out of business.
