British Academy Of Sport:west Midlands Bid

EDM number 561 in 1996-97, proposed by Lynne Jones on 19/02/1997.

That this House welcomes the West Midlands Consortium bid to become home to the British Academy of Sport and wholeheartedly supports the Consortium's efforts to keep Sport at the Heart of the Nation; approves this joint venture between Birmingham City Council, Birmingham University and partners in other local authorities and leading companies; highlights the fact that the project would draw together and enhance the already excellent sporting facilities in the city, in particular the National Indoor Arena, Alexandra Stadium and those of the university, using the image of a web of facilities, with a central location in Birmingham, reaching out to other parts of the region; further draws attention to the high level of expertise in sports science and medicine already possessed by Birmingham University, which came top of the Government's Higher Education Funding Council league table of universities and colleges involved in sports science work, and welcomes this opportunity to increase its already high reputation; and believes that the award of National City of Sport in 1995 was an ideal foundation upon which to build a national city of sport to guide British athletes through to the next century.
