EMILY'S LIST

EDM number 693 in 1996-97, proposed by Ann Winterton on 19/03/1997.

That this House notes that Emily's List is reported to have made payments of ú1,000 together with training expenses of a further ú650 to Labour women prospective parliamentary candidates who commit themselves to pursue pro-abortion objectives when elected to Parliament, and that individuals receiving such funding have received tacit support and possibly preferential treatment during the Labour Party's candidate selection process; notes that Emily's List has the active support of several Right honourable and honourable Members who are frontbench Opposition spokesmen; notes the Right honourable Member for Livingston's recent reported comments about 'cash for policies'; concludes that those who have received such payments should make clear this fact in their election address so that voters can make an informed decision about the suitability of such candidates for public office; and looks forward to reading the election address of Barbara Boyce in Harrogate and Knaresborough, Virginia Bucknor in Cambridgeshire North East, Katy Clark in Galloway and Upper Nithsdale; Claire Curtis-Tansley in Crosby, Angharad Davies in Montgomery, Lorna Fitzsimons in Rochdale, Megan Harris in Banff and Buchan, Lesley Hinds in Edinburgh West, Qaisra Khan in West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, Tess Kingham in Gloucester, Lindsey Kirkhill in Gordon, Siobhan McDonagh in Mitcham and Morden, Joan Ryan in Enfield North, Debra Shipley in Stourbridge, Jacqui Smith in Redditch, Ann Snelgrove in Bracknell, Helen Southworth in Warrington, Gisela Stuart in Birmingham, Edgbaston, Betty Williams in Conwy and Barbara Winstandley in Tonbridge and Malling.
