House Of Commons Commemoration Golf Trophy

EDM number 276 in 1997-98, proposed by Alex Salmond on 21/07/1997.

That this House wishes all the teams competing for the House of Commons Commemoration Trophy well in the knock-out competition involving the nine golf clubs which comprise the Buchan Seniors: Cruden Bay, Ellon, Inverallochy, Inverurie, Fraserburgh, Longside, Newburgh, Oldmeldrum and Peterhead; notes that the competition commemorates the historic match between Inverallachy Fishermen and the House of Commons on 1st April 1905 at Royal St George's Links, Sandwich where the House team was captained by Prime Minister A.J. Balfour; further notes the 10 golfers from Inverallochy were seen off by an enthusiastic 100 strong crowd as they left Fraserburgh Stations for London and that the Inverallochy 'Highlanders', as they became known, impressed everyone with whom they came into contact and were seen as being very able ambassadors for the North East of Scotland; and finally notes that the Fraserburgh Herald's headline at the time was 'Prime Minister beaten in First Round'.
