The Devolution Of Broadcasting To Wales

EDM number 961 in 2017-19, proposed by Liz Saville Roberts on 21/02/2018.
Categorised under the topics of Broadcasting and Devolution.

That this House believes responsibility over broadcasting must be devolved to Wales; condemns that Welsh citizens are being denied access to essential information about their democratic institutions and about the decisions being made on their behalf, and are therefore ill-equipped to hold their government and representatives to account for their actions; highlights with dismay that Welsh citizens have little choice but to watch domestic news that is almost solely focussed on the domestic affairs of another country, and therefore denied the public service for which they are paying; emphasises that an informed electorate who can be relied upon to set things right when those in power get things wrong is a fundamental component of democracy; recognises that by withholding ownership of broadcasting from the people of Wales, the Government is therefore withholding this intrinsic ingredient for democracy; and implores the Government to take immediate steps to devolve broadcasting to Wales.
