Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

EDM number 234 in 1995-96, proposed by Nigel Griffiths on 20/12/1995.

That this House notes with concern the continuing deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning from faulty or poorly serviced gas and coal burning appliances; further notes that a large number of the estimated 200 deaths and 500 near-misses, which RoSPA say are caused by carbon monoxide fumes, could be avoided by reforming the current gas-fitter registration system and by a programme of public education about the dangers of carbon monoxide; calls on HM Government to introduce individual registration for each of the estimated 200,000 existing gas fitters with the Council for Registered Gas Installers, rather than just the 50,000 businesses they work for; further notes that this is the only effective way in which the HSE and CORGI would be able to check on individual competence, and so strike off individuals who carry out sub-standard installation and repair work; and congratulates the coninuing work of the gas safety society, CO-Gas, which is lobbying for improvements in public awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and calling for reform in the system of CORGI registration.
