further notes with concern that these requests have not been met; further notes that the November 2010 elections were widely dismissed as neither free nor fair, and that although Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been released more than 2,000 political prisoners remain in detention; expresses concern, however, that no mention was made of necessary prior conditions; is mindful of the injustice still faced by the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus 36 years after the illegal invasion and continued occupation of the North of the island; regrets the continuous refusal of Turkey to enter into meaningful discussions on a just settlement; and calls on the Prime Minister and the Government to make clear to Turkey that a just settlement of the Cyprus problem is essential to the progress of Turkey's application for membership of the European Union.","date":"2010-09-15","status":"o"},{"topic":"European Union","id":"41709","proposer":"11221","edm":"749","session":"2010-12","title":"Cyprus Famagusta Annual Rally","text":"That this House warmly congratulates the Mayor of Famagusta, Mr Alexis Galanos, the members of the Famagusta municipality and the people of Famagusta on again holding their annual rally to remind the United Nations, European Union and countries such as the UK and the US of the continuing injustice that the Republic of Cyprus and in particular the town of Famagusta still to this day faces as a result of the illegal Turkish military invasion and occupation of a large area of Cyprus since July 1974; and calls on the Government to use its influence to seek the full reopening and development of the town of Famagusta which would greatly benefit both Greek and Turkish Cypriots and lead to real confidence-building measures which would play a major role towards an honourable and lasting settlement to the long-running tragedy Cyprus has faced since the events of July 1974.","date":"2010-09-15","status":"o"},{"topic":"European Union","id":"41382","proposer":"11323","edm":"439","session":"2010-12","title":"Eu Cohesion Policy","text":"That this House welcomes the findings of the National Assembly for Wales Committee on European and External Affairs that recommend continuing with an EU-wide cohesion policy for all regions of the European Union, both old and new Member States, with continued access to convergence and competitiveness-type funding subject to need and transitional support for those regions moving out of convergence status; believes that the ideas of a renationalisation of Cohesion Policy, by repatriating EU funding to relativelyricher Member States, including the UK, should be rejected as not being in the best interests of Wales, the UK or the wider European Union;
