Paddington-Heathrow Rail Link

That this House notes that the proposed fast British Rail link from Paddington to Heathrow will cost ú6 single because of the Government's policy of trying to make individual lines profitable; believes that because the British Airports Authority wants to see a return on its investment the fares are so high that many people travelling to Heathrow will be forced to use the slow and overcrowded Piccadilly Line trains or they will drive, causing more congestion and pollution on the roads ; notes that a family of two adults and two children using the British Rail service to meet a relative at Heathrow would have to spend ú36, not including the cost of getting to Paddington; believes that Heathrow needs better rail links, but that those links should form part of an integrated transport network for the London area, and that Travelcards and concessionary fares should be valid on the Heathrow link; and further believes that the Heathrow fast link shows that if overriding priority is given to involving the private sector in transport planning, whatever the London-wide implications, then the result will be high fares and a disjointed and confusing transport system.
