Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty And Government Policy

That this House notes that the Government has commitments under Article VI of the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to pursue negotiations in good faith to achieve the cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to achieve nuclear disarmament; believes that the Government is seriously and persistently in violation of these commitments and is especially dismayed that the United Kingdom and the United States are engaged in the active escalation of nuclear dangers through the Trident purchase agreement; is concerned that the provisions of the Trident nuclear ballistic missile system and warhead package violates the Stipulation of Article I of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which prohibits those who are party to the treaty from the direct or indirect transfer of nuclear weapons, nuclear explosive devices, of controls over these; and further calls upon the Government to actively enter all the United Kingdom's nuclear weapons into the multi-lateral nuclear disarmament negotiations and to bring proposals before this House in support of non-proliferation so that these can then be submitted to the Fourth Quinquennial Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in Geneva on 20th August to 14th September, thereby encouraging the 140 states who are party to the treaty to abide by its provisions and to encourage non-members to join the treaty.
