EDM number 52 in 1989-90, proposed by Peter L Pike on 23/11/1989.

That this House believes that the confidentiality of census information would be destroyed if such information were to be published in the form of small area data statistics which could be linked to postal codes; that such a practice would greatly increase the practice of red-lining certain postal districts for insurance and mortgage purposes, increase the volume of junk mail to target groups, and lead to individuals being identified from census material; and therefore demands changes in the legislation to ensure that census material will not be published in a form that can be linked to postal codes.
