That this House expresses its great concern at the resignation of the Chief Executive of the National Rivers Authority; appreciates the commitment of the staff of the NRA to improving the aquatic environment; recognises the frustration throughout the organisation from the difficulties created by the Government at the time of water privatisation, namely, the immunities from prosecution for over 800 sewage treatment works, the problems arising from the 95 per cent. compliance rule and the complexity of sampling and analytical arrangements, which all make positive action by the NRA more difficult; is alarmed at the possibility of political interference by the Minister of State in the Department of the Environment in the case of pentachlorophenol contamination of Eagley Brook in his constituency; and calls on the Select Committee on the Environment to investigate the circumstances surrounding the departure of the Chief Executive from the NRA.
