Government Claims On Family Credit
EDM number 1041 in 1990-91, proposed by Paul Flynn on 26/06/1991.
That this House notes that the total of two million families in receipt of Family Credit quoted by Government Ministers disregards the fact that claims must be renewed every six months and that 50 per cent of families successfully reclaim and are thus counted several times over in the two million total; records that in a letter to the honourable Member for Newport West of 6th June, the Benefit Agency said that 42.9 per cent. of new claims cleared in April were unsuccessful; notes that Family Income Supplement, which was described by the honourable Member for Torridge and West Devon as "Labour's family income supplement", was introduced by a Conservative government as a cheap alternative to raising family allowances; and expresses surprise that the present Government appears to be proud that more families than ever before are dependent on means-tested benefits.
This motion has been signed by a total of 49 MPs.
