Premium Rate Telephone Services - Contracting In

EDM number 458 in 1990-91, proposed by Terry Lewis on 12/02/1991.

That this House, whilst welcoming the British Telecom offer of a free call barring of premium rate services to its customers, notes with regret that subscribers are now being asked to put the request for this in writing; believes this to be contrary to the original instruction which was that telephone contact with the subscriber's local telephone sales office would be sufficient request; further believes that this latest circumstance reinforces the case for a 'contracting in' system by the subscriber, in writing, as opposed to the 'contracting out' system now on offer; and therefore urges the Director General OFTEL to impose this solution, which has been advanced for the past five years by the honourable Member for Worsley, upon British Telecom.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
