Staff Cuts On London Underground

That this House expresses its concern at London Underground Limited's proposals to cut by 1,000 the number of staff directly involved in dealing with passengers and in the operation of the rail services at a time of increasing anxiety over security and safety on the Underground network; fears that the effect of the cuts will be to reduce or eliminate staff on stations, particularly at night, and reduce train service frequencies thus further increasing congestion; believes the closure of booking offices at certain times of day at many stations will also create a climate that will encourage fare evasion and consequent loss of revenue; and insists that the safety and security of the London Underground system must take priority over short-term financial considerations.
