Democracy And Human Rights In Burma
EDM number 234 in 1991-92, proposed by Keith Raffan on 21/11/1991.
That this House condemns the fact that the State Law and Order Restoration Council, the brutal military junta in Burma, has still not handed over power to the democratically-elected National League for Democracy who won 82 per cent. of the vote in the general election in Burma on 27th May 1990, that criticism of SLORC is an imprisonable offence and that the ex-Secretary of the NLD, Aung San Suu Kyi, winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, has now been under house arrest for more than two years; and further calls on Her Majesty's Government to continue to condemn SLORC, to support the Swedish-sponsored resolution at this year's United Nations General Assembly criticising Burma's human rights record and to call for the free and unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi.
This motion has been signed by a total of 137 MPs.
