Mr Abbas Shiblak

EDM number 526 in 1991-92, proposed by George Galloway on 21/01/1992.

That this House notes with grave concern that following the false identification, as a security risk, of Mr Abbas Shiblak, a Palestinian academic and senior information officer of the Arab League during the Gulf War, Palestinians with the surname Shiblak were in one case tortured and executed by Kuwaiti vigilantes, in others detained and expelled from the country by the royal authorities in Bahrain; notes that Her Majesty's Government has acknowledged its grave error by its subsequent granting of British citizenship to Mr Shiblak; calls on Her Majesty's Government to demand from its allies in the Gulf the reinstatement of the Shiblaks to their positions and property and full compensation for those tortured and killed as a result of this grave error, and the cessation of pogroms against Palestinian refugees in the Gulf; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to respond publicly to Sir Peter Woodfield's report on MI5's handling of the Gulf War detentions of Arab citizens in the United Kingdom, given to the Home Secretary last December.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
