CITIZEN'S CHARTER AND CLOSURE OF RESETTLEMENT CENTRES

That this House is appalled that DSS Resettlement Centres are to be closed on 31st March despite the lack of alternative provision; regrets that the Resettlement Agency, in anticipation of this date, is gradually reducing the availability of emergency beds; believes this callous act will add significantly to the numbers sleeping rough this winter; recalls that the Prime Minister, when Minister of State for Social Security, gave a solemn undertaking that this would not be allowed to happen; speculates how such treatment and broken promises can occur in the context of the Citizen's Charter which the Prime Minister avers is the cornerstone of the Government's policies; and, therefore, calls upon the Right honourable Gentleman, at this late stage, to honour his original undertakings by halting any further progress in the closure programme until adequate replacement facilities are available.
