Coalfield Communities At Christmas 1992

EDM number 1115 in 1992-93, proposed by Simon Hughes on 16/12/1992.

That this House congratulates and thanks the Coalfield Communities Campaign for organising on the last parliamentary working day before Christmas a major meeting in the House to publicise the plight of the coalfield communities threatened by the Government's proposed pit closures and to argue the strategic national case for a continuing coal industry; urges Her Majesty's Government to listen to the honourable Members of the three largest British political parties at the meeting and to the other eminent speakers and stop its vicious and indiscriminate colliery closures; believes that honourable Members should not forget the situation of the many families in coalfield communities during Christmas time when many people face what should be a season of rejoicing with great uncertainty about their future; notes that the President of the Board of Trade has not visited a single pit since announcing his closure programme; and invites the President of the Board of Trade to take steps to understand the effect of his policies by spending Christmas Day or at least one other day during the holidays down a threatened pit in order to learn more at first hand about the mining industry and coalfield communities.
