Grant To Relate
EDM number 1325 in 1992-93, proposed by Alan Meale on 04/02/1993.
That this House is seriously concerned that there seems currently to be little or no structure which exists for co-ordination across the six or more Government Departments which have a direct interest in policies affecting families; is therefore amazed by the recent decision by the Home Office to cut, in real terms, the financial grant aid given to the organisation Relate by the sum of ú25,000 per annum from 1st April, a body whose work helps to achieve major savings for the Treasury by virtue of the fact that each divorce in Britain where children are involved carries with it an average cost of ú10,000 to the taxpayer, which is not an insignificant sum when it is considered that Relate helps an estimated 70,000 people every year; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government to think again about this wrong, uneconomic and untimely decision.
This motion has been signed by a total of 85 MPs.
