VAT And Charities

EDM number 1371 in 1992-93, proposed by John Hannam on 10/02/1993.

That this House recognises the significant contribution made by charities through the provision of vital services, such as sea-rescue, help for disabled people and the provision of care and medical research; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to introduce equality of treatment for charities by compensating them for the substantial irrecoverable VAT burden currently amounting to ú300 million a year which they carry, and which is not borne either by local authorities or by commercial organisations.
