Relief For Elderly Carers

That this House expresses its concern about the inadequacy of respite care provision for individuals and their elderly carers, as highlighted in Central Television's Central Lobby programme of 18th February; notes the continuing shortfall in short-term care and day services for people with learning disabilities; recognises the scale of problems faced by parents in their 60's, 70's and 80's who have the full-time care for adult sons or daughters with severe learning disabilities and the stresses that this places on them; and calls upon the Government to bring forward a fully-funded programme which guarantees the right to respite care, an expanded range of local authority and health authority support services and the right of individuals and their carers to have a say in the services to be provided.
