Future Of Fisheries Research

That this House recognises that a number of the current difficulties facing the fishing industry arise partly from insufficient knowledge of marine stocks and appropriate conservation measures; notes with concern that, as part of its objective under the Next Steps Initiative to grant agency status to the Fisheries Research Services in Scotland, the Government has commissioned a review of the Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen, a world-renowned institution which has contributed greatly to understanding of marine stocks and played a leading role in devising new conservation measures such as the square mesh panel; believes that this review undermines the future of the laboratory and puts in question the Government's purported aim of securing a better balance between fishing effort and available stocks; and therefore calls on the Government to pledge its unequivocal commitment to the future of the Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen.
