Scottish And Westminster Communications And The Future Of Water In Scotland

EDM number 1749 in 1992-93, proposed by Andrew Welsh on 31/03/1993.

That this House welcomes the publication of the thorough and well researched report, The Future of Water and Sewerage Services in Scotland: An Overview of Responses to the Scottish Office, by Scottish and Westminster Communications which found that, of the 676 organisations who responded to the Scottish Office consultation document, virtually all were opposed to water privatisation; notes that of the 18 Conservative constituency associations which expressed a view, not one favoured privatisation and only one favoured franchising; further notes that of the 32 companies and businesses which submitted responses only four appeared to favour a full scale privatisation with four favouring franchising; believes this report demonstrates clearly the breadth of opposition to water privatisation which exists throughout the length and breadth of Scotland and from every conceivable section of the community; regrets the failure of the Scottish Secretary to publish the responses to his consultation document; and calls on him to take stock of the clearly expressed views of the Scottish people by ensuring that Scottish water services remain within local authority ownership, control and delivery.
