Pensions And Post Offices

That this House notes with alarm the suggestion that the payments of pensions might be made through banks rather than through post offices; notes that for the overwhelming majority of pensioners the facility to draw pensions at their local post office is convenient, safe and desirable; fears that the loss of pension business could undermine the viability of many small postal sub-offices leading to the closure of neighbourhood and village shops; and calls upon the Government to give a categoric guarantee that this unfortunate proposal will not be implemented, and that pensioners and sub post office staff will be given a written assurance to such end.
