Acid Rain

EDM number 2016 in 1992-93, proposed by Simon Hughes on 14/05/1993.

That this House congratulates the Countryside Council for Wales on its report published on 13th May, entitled Terrestrial SSSIs at Risk from Soil Acidification in Wales; notes that 218 sites of special scientific interest will still be suffering the effects of soil acidification into the next century unless further reductions in sulphur dioxide emissions are agreed; further notes that even if an 80 per cent reduction of sulphur dioxide emissions were achieved , 86 of the sites would still remain damaged by acid rain; believes that the figures outlined in the report emphasize the need for the implementation of a national sustainable development strategy for Wales; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to adopt a strategy, with a specific timetable, to secure at least an 80 per cent. reduction in sulphur dioxide emissions by the year 2003.

This motion has been signed by a total of 20 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
