Heavier Lorries For Combined Road/rail Transport

That this House welcomes the Department of Transport's consultation paper Heavier lorries for combined road/rail transport; notes, however, that only six or so terminals are being proposed for the whole of Great Britain, which would result in 44 tonne lorries travelling very great distances; condemns the road freight industry for trying to use this consultation as an excuse to seek general acceptance for 44 tonne lorries; calls on the Secretary of State for Transport to resist demands for the general introduction of 44 tonne lorries; and believes that the priority for British freight transport should be positive measures to move freight off the roads and on to Britain's under-utilised railways.
