Bilsthorpe Colliery
EDM number 2467 in 1992-93, proposed by Paddy Tipping on 19/10/1993.
That this House expresses its deepest sympathy to the families and relatives of those miners who either lost their lives or were injured because of the Bilsthorpe colliery disaster in August; believes also that great tribute should be paid to those miners and members of the mines rescue services who risked their lives in rescuing three of the trapped miners, also the role of the health, fire, police and ambulance services throughout the time of the accident; and recognising the factrors relative to the accident and the concerns of miners and their families with regard to proposed changes of mining practices and possible deregulation of the industry, calls upon Her Majesty's Government (a) to hold an independent public inquiry into the Bilsthorpe disaster headed by someone unconnected with organisations associated with the tragedy, (b) to organise a national conference between the Health and Safety Executive, British Coal and the mining unions to discuss the problems, if any, associated with the use of roof bolts in British coal mines and (c) in the interim to withdraw the Health and Safety Executive's proposals for the deregulation of the industry.
