Prison Ships

EDM number 2574 in 1992-93, proposed by John Hutton on 02/11/1993.

That this House notes with concern the Government's intention to use prison ships in order to accommodate an expected rise in the prison poulation; believes that such a policy is unsafe, ineffective and potentially dangerous; rejects the siting of such a vessel in the port of Barrow in Furness; and expresses surprise that the Home Secretary has not called for the siting of a prison ship in his own constituency of Folkestone.
