Sellafield Demonstration

EDM number 267 in 1992-93, proposed by Llew Smith on 16/06/1992.

That this House deplores the decision by British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) to ban the public demonstration and protest concert by U2 outside Sellafield on 20th June by applying for a High Court injunction, granted by Mr Justice May on 16th June; believes that Greenpeace and other environmental and disarmament groups have every right to make their opposition to BNFL's operations at Sellafield known through demonstrations and other protest activities; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government as the only shareholder in BNFL to instruct the BNFL board to permit the protest to go ahead and uphold the right of free speech in the United Kingdom.
