Processing At Dounreay

EDM number 355 in 1992-93, proposed by Margaret Ewing on 25/06/1992.

That this House views with alarm the report in the Scotland on Sunday newspaper of 15th June which revealed that the Dounreay nuclear plant has agreed to store and process 348kg of uranium 235 on behalf of the German nuclear company, Nukem; notes that this highly irradiated uranium will be transported across Europe to other nuclear reactors; further notes the concern expressed in the article that this contract, involving uranium originally supplied by the USA to the German THTR-300 reactor may be jeopardising a USA non-proliferation programme designed to eliminate highly irradiated uranium from commercial transactions; and calls for an immediate moratorium on all work carried out by Dounreay in connection with highly irradiated uranium.

This motion has been signed by a total of 14 MPs.
