Colliery Closures

EDM number 576 in 1992-93, proposed by Peter Hardy on 19/10/1992.

That this House considers that the colliery closures announced on 13th October should not proceed and that reconsideration should be given to the hasty, excessive and costly development of gas-fired electricity generation, to the risk of energy dependence and to the effect which the inevitably increased reliance upon imported fuel will have on the national economy; and regrets that, yet again, decisions have been made which owe more to short-sighted and flawed calculations than to common sense.
