Sport In South Africa

EDM number 830 in 1992-93, proposed by Robert Hughes on 12/11/1992.

That this House reaffirms its support for the policy of the Commonwealth and the United Nations which, in the light of the progress being made towards a united, non-racial and democratic South Africa, have agreed to the relaxation of the sports boycott of South Africa for those sports codes which have established a unified and genuinely non-racial governing body and which are pursuing a comprehensive programme for the development of the sport within black communities; welcomes the efforts of those sports codes which are seeking to meet these conditions; regrets the lack of progress in rugby union football, which has led the National and Olympic Sports Congress and the African National Congress to withdraw their support for any future international rugby tours; calls upon the South African Rugby Football Union to respond positively to the proposals put forward by the National and Olympic Sports Congress to overcome the current crisis; expresses its particular concern at the forthcoming tour of Wales by the Transvaal Rugby Football Union, which is to take place in defiance of direct appeals from the National and Olympic Sports Congress and the African National Congress; recognises that this tour falls outside the framework agreed by the Commonwealth for the relaxation of the sports boycott; and therefore calls upon the British Government to honour its responsibilities under the Gleneagles Agreement by urging the Welsh Rugby Union to postpone the tour and by providing no support or assistance to the tour should it take place.

This motion has been signed by a total of 48 MPs.
