Midland Metro

EDM number 859 in 1992-93, proposed by Dennis Turner on 17/11/1992.

That this House recognises Midland Metro Line 1 as top of the list of light rail schemes awaiting funding being the only scheme to have passed a challenging economic appraisal and secured the necessary parliamentary powers; welcomes the fact that the project will employ 1, 100 people in construction, will create over 1,500 additional jobs thereafter through regeneration of a depressed area and will remove up to 14,000 car journeys per day off congested roads; notes the very strong private sector interest in the project and the decision by Centro to resume the tendering process; and urges the Government to allocate funds to the scheme as a matter of priority in accordance with its economic strategy of promoting growth and supporting job-creating capital projects.
